Enthusiasm and feelings of happiness after the first rehearsal: Germany’s first German-Ukrainian choir has started its rehearsals and has demonstrated the unifying power of music. Overcoming all language barriers, the voices of refugees and long-time residents united in an impressive choral sound. The subsequent drink offered the opportunity for the almost 50 participants, half of whom come from Ukraine, to get to know each other personally and to exchange ideas. “We live solidarity and enable real participation,” says choir chairman Pascal Paul-Harang, who had the idea for the project. “Our new singers, whether from the Ukraine or from Karlsruhe, find a place of joy with us, even a musical home.” Thanks to their often amazing affinity for singing and their wealth of musical experience, the refugees in the ensemble experience beneficial recognition and experience each other as a real asset. Peter Arestov, the musical director of the ensemble, which is unique in Germany, comes from the Ukraine himself and from now on leads the rehearsals in several languages: in German, Russian and Ukrainian. The project is under the patronage of the Karlsruhe Mayor for Culture, Dr. Albert Kauflein. From now on, rehearsals for the first public appearance will take place every Wednesday from 7:30 p.m. in the Johannis-Paulus-Gemeindesaal in Karlsruhe. Other participating singers are always welcome.
